Robert Johnson (1936)

All the recordings of Robert Johnson, delta blues master, from five recording sessions back in 1936-37. This is the 'source code' for nearly any blues musician, and the booklet contains tributes from Eric Clapton and Keith Richards. Clapton says Johnson made no efforts to make his music approachable, and EC often gave up on the idea of improving the performance in any way.

The music is very simple. There are almost no guitar solos, just some simple chordwork. Johnson's voice is high and smooth. The recording quality is amazingly clean (modern technology coming in to remove the noise, I'm sure), but rather thin. Overall far better than I expected for the period.

Highly recommended stuff for any serious student of the blues.
